   The two were held and tried in Garden City, convicted of four counts of first-degree murder, and sentenced to death in March 1960.

   Williams was tried only for the murders of Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne. On February 27, 1982, after about 11 hours of deliberation, the jury convicted him of both; he received two consecutive life terms.
