About this data

Numbers come from theMurder Accountability Project's version of the FBI's Supplementary Homicide Reports (1976 onward), which police departments file voluntarily. Each record is one victim and has no names. "Solved" means police reported an identified offender. Some agencies skip years, so totals can differ from official state reports. Rates use 2020 Census population for every year, so they are approximate for earlier decades.

Seattle numbers come from the Seattle Police Department's publiccrime data(murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 2008 onward). SPD withholds the location of homicides, so they are shown by police beat only, using today's beat boundaries. The current year is partial.
