In July 1965, Sylvia Likens, 16, and her younger sister were left as paying boarders with Gertrude Baniszewski, a divorced mother of seven, at her house on East New York Street in Indianapolis while their parents worked the fair circuit. Over the next three months Baniszewski, several of her children and neighborhood teenagers abused Sylvia, and she died in the house on October 26, 1965. In 1966 a Marion County jury convicted Gertrude Baniszewski of first-degree murder and her daughter Paula of second-degree murder; three teenage boys were convicted of manslaughter. Gertrude was convicted again at a 1971 retrial and was paroled in 1985.
