Pearl Bryan, 22, of Greencastle, Indiana, was pregnant when she traveled to Cincinnati in late January 1896 to see Scott Jackson, a dental student. Her headless body was found on February 1 on a farm in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, across the Ohio River. A Newport shoe dealer traced her shoes to a Greencastle store, which led to her identification and to Jackson and his roommate Alonzo Walling. Each blamed the other, but both were convicted of first-degree murder in separate trials in 1896 and hanged together in Newport on March 20, 1897. Her head was never found.
