Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay University of Wyoming student, was abducted from a Laramie bar on the night of October 6, 1998, by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, who drove him to a rural area east of town, beat him severely and left him tied to a fence. He was found about 18 hours later and died on October 12 at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Henderson pleaded guilty in April 1999; McKinney was convicted of felony murder by a jury in November 1999. Each received two consecutive life terms, sparing McKinney a possible death sentence at the request of Shepard's parents. His death became a turning point for hate-crime laws, leading to the federal Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.
