Between August 2005 and June 2006 a gunman the press called the "Baseline Killer" committed a string of murders, sexual assaults and armed robberies across Phoenix and Tempe, killing nine people. Mark Goudeau, a construction worker on parole, was arrested in September 2006 after DNA linked him to the sexual assault of two sisters in a Phoenix park, and was sentenced to 438 years for that case in 2007. In October 2011 a Maricopa County jury convicted him of all nine murders and 58 other charges, and he was sentenced to death nine times. The Arizona Supreme Court upheld the sentences in 2016; he still says he is innocent.
