On July 10, 1981, Ken Rex McElroy, 47, was shot and killed as he sat in his pickup truck on the main street of Skidmore, a farming town in northwest Missouri, with his wife beside him. McElroy had faced charges dozens of times over the years and had recently been convicted of assault for shooting the town's grocer; free on bond pending appeal, he had made threats against the grocer at a local bar. Dozens of townspeople were nearby when he was shot, but none told investigators they had seen who fired. The prosecutor filed no charges, a federal investigation also ended without charges, and the case remains unsolved.
