On May 25, 1997, 7-year-old Sherrice Iverson of Los Angeles was killed in a restroom at the Primadonna Resort & Casino in Primm, Nevada, on the California border, by Jeremy Strohmeyer, an 18-year-old from Long Beach. He was arrested at his home three days later. On September 8, 1998, he pleaded guilty to murder, kidnapping and sexual assault to avoid the death penalty, and was sentenced to life without parole. Because a friend of Strohmeyer's had seen part of the attack and walked away, California passed the Sherrice Iverson Child Victim Protection Act, requiring witnesses to report crimes against young children.
