On July 23, 2007, Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky broke into the Petit family's home in Cheshire, Connecticut, overnight. They beat Dr. William Petit and tied up his family, forced Jennifer Hawke-Petit to withdraw money from a bank that morning, then killed her and set the house on fire; her daughters Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, died in the fire. William Petit escaped. The men were caught fleeing in the family's car. Both were convicted and sentenced to death, and after Connecticut ended capital punishment both were resentenced in 2016 to six consecutive life terms.
