On the night of October 1, 2017, a gunman firing from his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel on the Las Vegas Strip shot into the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival across the street, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds; two more later died of their wounds. It is the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in modern U.S. history. Police who breached the suite found the shooter, Stephen Paddock, 64, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's final report in August 2018 found he acted alone but could not establish a motive. The victims are honored with a tree each at the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden, and a permanent memorial is planned at the festival site.
